After 25 years of absorbing some of the best jazz in the world, the red velvet curtains which hung at the back of the stage at the Village Vanguard have come down. They have been the backdrop to many of the most legendary performers and performances from musicians such as Bill Evans, John Coltrane, Dexter Gordon, Charlie Mingus, Roy Haynes, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Bill Charlap, Brad Mehldau Bill Frisell, Joe Lovano and many more. The Vanguard will turn 75 years in 2010 and if the curtains could speak or sing, they could tell you plenty! These curtains are ideal for jazz enthusiasts and collectors or people who have a lot of wall space to fill. The curtains are constructed of sturdy red velvet. They are about 43 yards in length by 7 feet, 6 inches in height. They are box pleated on the top so they fall gracefully. They come in 3 sections. Though in good shape, they are in slightly foxed condition. And they are flame proofed, by the way. A letter of authenticity from the Vanguard's owner will be included in the shipment. Sold as is.

FACT CORRECTION: January 30, 2009. As an astute fan pointed out, we were less than diligent RE fact-checking our own history. Though Coltrane, Bill Evans and Charlie Mingus were of course frequent headliners at the club over the years, they were rather unable to make any gigs after 1983. (Coltrane passed away in 1967, Charlie Mingus in 1979 and Bill Evans in 1980). We apologize for this lapse of concentration on our part. But even so, the list of legends who DID play at the club during the curtain's tenure includes those mentioned above (excluding Coltrane, Mingus and Evans) as well as Herbie Hancock, Milt Jackson, Shirley Horn, Pat Metheny, Jim Hall, McCoy Tyner, Lou Donaldson and many, many others.
